Forest ban to be extended

5:40 am on 11 May 2013

Indonesia is to extend a ban on forest clearing.

A two-year moratorium was imposed on clearing forest in May 2011 under a $US1 billion climate deal with Norway covering 65 million hectares of forest.

This was due to expire on 20 May. But an official for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the moratorium will be extended until October or December next year.

Indonesia is under international pressure to curb deforestation and destruction of its peatlands and forests.
