The Australian Navy assisted a asylum seeker vessel carrying at least 130 people near Christmas Island on Thursday.

APP reports the passengers and crew have now been transferred to Christmas Island.

The Home Affairs department said on Saturday the vessel was east of Christmas Island when it got into distress on Thursday and HMAS Larrakia was sent to the scene.

A statement confirmed that those on board had been transferred for security, health and identity checks.
