Red Cross office in Afghanistan attacked

10:58 am on 30 May 2013

Militants have attacked the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan.

Eyewitnesses described a large explosion followed by the sound of gunfire, the BBC reports.

Local officials say a suicide bomber detonated his explosives at the office gate before at least two gunmen entered the building, and a gun battle followed on between them and Afghan security forces.

The officals said an Afghan security guard was killed in the assault.

Seven foreign Red Cross workers were rescued and are safe. The head of the office was injured in the attack.
