Death of actress Jean Stapleton

Emmy-winning actress Jean Stapleton, best known for her role as Edith Bunker in the groundbreaking All in the Family TV series, has died.

Stapleton, 90, died on Friday of natural causes at her home in New York City.

She won three Emmys for her role as the long-suffering wife of Archie Bunker, a loud-mouthed bigot played by the late Carroll O'Connor.

She appeared in All In The Family from 1971 - 1979 and continued the role for a time in a spinoff show Archie Bunker's Place in 1979.

Afterwards she had a part in a 1987 Broadway revival of the play Arsenic and Old Lace.

In 1990, she received an Obie Award from the Village Voice newspaper for her performances in plays Mountain Language and The Birthday Party, both by Harold Pinter.
