Australia has signed the Arms Trade Treaty which will regulate the global trading in tanks, aircraft, assault rifles and ammunition.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the treaty on 2 April.
"For Australia, this represents the culmination of years of commitment and leadership on this issue," Foreign Minister Bob Carr Carr said in a statement on Monday.
AAP reprots Australia announced last July it would provide $A1 million to an aid fund to help developing nations in implementing the treaty.
