Two men are fighting for their lives in hospital in Brisbane after drinking a bad batch of home-made grappa which killed two of their mates on Sunday.

Four men were drinking the spirit on a property at Ballandean near Stanthorpe.

Joel Lynam, 21, died at the property from suspected methanol poisoning.

Bryan Wilmot, 30, was taken to Toowoomba hospital where he died late on Monday.

The two other men, aged 21 and 26, are fighting for their lives in hospital in Brisbane. One of those men is Mr Lynam's brother.

The ABC reports Ballandean is a wine-producing area with a tradition of making grappa from left-over grape skins.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said it is an extraordinary and tragic event.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
