Restaurant owner says menu mocking PM a joke

A restaurant owner has taken responsibility for a menu making crude references to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and says it was not distributed at a fundraising event.

The menu featured a dish called "Julia Gillard Kentucky Fried Quail" which made vulgar references to the prime minister's body, the ABC reports.

The menu was believed to have been used at a fundraiser dinner for a Liberal National Party candidate in September's general election, Mal Brough, at which opposition treasury spokesperson Joe Hockey was guest of honour.

Restaurant owner Joe Richards now says he created the mock menu as a light-hearted joke, and it was not given out on the night.

He says it is unfortunate a staff member posted it on social media.

Earlier, Ms Gillard called for Mr Brough's endorsement to be withdrawn over the menu.

Mr Brough earlier apologised and said the menu was written by a non-party member who thought it would be "humorous", but is now "deeply apologetic".

Mr Hockey has tweeted that he cannot recall ever seeing the menu, but added that "it is offensive and inappropriate whenever it was put out and it is now".
