A third of all young people in the Northern Territory are not enrolled to vote, which is the highest rate in Australia.

AAP reports almost 30,000 eligible voters are missing from the NT electoral roll and 10,000 of them are aged between 18 - 24.

The Australian Electoral Commission said that figure represents one third of the total youth population of the territory.

AEC NT manager Robert Pugsley told AAP the NT's youth absentee voter rate is the highest in Australia.

Enrolment to vote in Australia compulsory for people aged over 18, but 1.4 million eligible voters are missing from the electoral roll. A third of those are aged 18-24.
