12:54 pm on 21 July 2013

A search began on Sunday for two people on a boat reported missing after a storm in the Torres Strait.

Police said five boats left Saibai Island at around 2pm (AEST) on Saturday heading towards Yorke Island and they were struck by the storm a short time later.

After the storm passed it was discovered one of the boats was missing.

The other boats continued on to Yorke Island and waited for the fifth.

AAP reports the alarm was raised around 10pm on Saturday when the fifth boat, with two people aboard, failed to arrive.

Police said early on Sunday a search involving a fixed wing aircraft and a helicopter was underway.
