Four hundred employees at a Holden car plant in Adelaide have taken voluntary redundancies and will finish work on Friday.

Federation of Vehicle Industry Unions spokesman John Camillo says more than 500 members put their hands up to take a separation package.

However, the ABC reports the future of Holden in Adelaide is still in doubt. The company is expected to finalise a new business plan in September.

Holden announced in April that it wanted to cut 400 jobs at the plant at Elizabeth by July.

Until June, it appeared the company would fail to meet its target, because only 300 had expressed interest in voluntary redundancies.

But the ABC reports that changed on 18 June, when Holden warned it needed to cut costs and was considering pay cuts.
