Stake in UK blood company sold to US firm

The British government has sold an 80% stake in Plasma Resources UK, a blood products company, to a private equity firm in the United States.

Bain Capital paid £230 million for the majority stake in the company, which supplies the NHS with treatments for haemophilia and immune deficiencies.

The BBC reports plasma is a straw-coloured blood component that acts as a clotting agent. It has been imported from the United States since the emergence of mad cow disease.

Some plasma products are supplied to the NHS and others are sold outside Britain. It is not connected to the National Blood Service.

The government announced plans to sell the company in January.
