15 confirmed dead in boat sinking off Java

9:32 pm on 26 July 2013

The confirmed death toll after a boat carrying some 200 asylum-seekers bound for Australia capsized has risen to 15.

Indonesian rescuers say it is unlikely that any more survivors will be found, three days after the boat sank off Java.

Among the 15 dead are six children, including an 18-month-old baby, and a pregnant woman.

An AFP reporter who spoke to survivors says one group of 38, including women and children, swam in darkness for up to four hours in high seas to reach the shore on Tuesday night.
