Police in Italy have launched a large operation against the Mafia in and around Rome.

Another operation was also launched in the southern Calabria region, home of the 'Ndrangheta organisation, which operates across Europe and has connections with Colombian drug cartels.

The BBC reports more than 50 people have been arrested, many of them suspected of controlling the distribution of illegal drugs in the capital and the coastal town of Ostia.

The ANSA news agency reports the operation in the south led to 65 arrests in the town of Lamezia Terme.

The BBC reports assets worth 200 million euros (£173 million) were seized from five businessmen, suspected of involvement with the Giampa clan of the 'Ndrangheta.
