Police in Queensland say no charges are expected to be laid against a woman who left a newborn baby in a basket outside a house at Logan, south of Brisbane.

The baby boy was found abandoned on the front steps of a house at Kingston at about 5.30am (AEST) on Saturday.

Police have confirmed a woman aged in her 20s who they questioned on Sunday night, is the baby's mother.

The woman was taken to Logan hospital on Sunday afternoon. Police said she did not turn herself in, but was found by officers.

The ABC reports the baby is underweight but otherwise in good health. Police said he will remain at Logan hospital for the time being.

No charges will be laid against the mother because there was no real neglect as she left provisions, including nappies, bottles and formula.

AAP reports the Logan family has called him 'Moses', a reference to the biblical prophet who was also found in a basket as a baby.

The family has said it's prepared to raise the child, but the decision rests with child safety agencies.
