Government forces in Syria have captured most of the neighbourhood of Khalidiya in the city of Homs.
The army began an offensive there on Saturday.
Rebels had held Khalidiya for more than a year. Its capture reflects a series of recent gains by government forces and Hizbollah fighters from Lebanon.
The BBC reports the city was seen as a symbol for the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
But only the Old City of Homs and a few other districts remain under rebel control.
Homs is a strategically important city, linking the capital Damascus to the coast.
