Final day of campaigning in Zimbabwe

1:08 pm on 30 July 2013

The final day of campaigning is taking place in Zimbabwe before a general election on Wednesday.

Thousands of people gathered on Monday for the final rally of the Movement for Democratic Change, led by prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

An International Crisis Group has warned conditions may not exist for a free and fair election.

The BBC reports the poll will end a coalition between the MDC and the Zanu-PF party.

The army, police and electoral bodies remain under the control of President Robert Mugabe, 89, who has held power for 33 years.

In the run-up to the vote, Mr Tsvangirai's political allies, independent lawyers, NGOs and the media have suffered regular intimidation.
