Children rescued by FBI

1:08 pm on 30 July 2013

The FBI says it rescued 105 children and arrested 150 pimps in 76 cities in the United States over the weekend.

The BBC reports the largest numbers of children were in San Francisco, Detroit, Milwaukee, Denver and New Orleans.

Since 2003, 2700 children have been rescued in such raids and some 1350 people have been convicted in such cases, including life prison sentences for 10 pimps, the FBI said.

FBI assistant director Ronald Hosko said the children had been sold for sex at truck stops, casinos, motels as well as on social media and online advertisements.

The children were trapped in a cycle of drugs, abuse and even torture.

The US Justice Department has estimated as many as 450,000 children run away from home each year.
