Delay in Australia's first asylum seeker transfer to PNG

2:40 pm on 31 July 2013

Bad weather has forced the postponement of the first transfer of asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea under Australia's tough border protection policy.

The group was scheduled arrive at Manus Island on Wednesday but a spokesman for Australia's Immigration Department said it had not yet left Christmas Island.

More than 1300 people have arrived in Australia since the Government announced all asylum seekers arriving by boat would be transferred to PNG and resettled if they were found to be genuine refugees, the ABC reports.

Immigration Minister Tony Burke said only single adult men will be initially sent to the detention centre as the facilities were not ready for family groups.
