Second jewellery heist in Cannes

Armed men have held up a store selling luxury watches in the French Riviera resort of Cannes, three days after a huge jewellery heist at a nearby hotel.

Two men robbed the Kronometry store on a beachfront avenue on Wednesday. The value of the stolen goods is not yet known.

The shop is one of many luxury stores on Boulevard de la Croisette and sits opposite the building where the famed Cannes film festival is held every year.

It had already been the victim of a €1 million heist in February, when robbers stole about 150 watches.

A robbery on Sunday at the nearby Carlton Hotel netted jewellery worth $US136 million in one of the biggest such heists ever, AFP reports.

The theft at the Carlton stunned police and media with its simplicity. An armed man just walked into the hotel, which is popular with film stars and was once the location of Alfred Hitchcock's thriller To Catch A Thief, and made off on foot with earrings, pendants and other jewellery.
