Hollywood seeing big box office returns despite flops

Hollywood is on course for its biggest summer box office in the United States despite several high profile flops.

Big budget films The Lone Ranger, After Earth and Turbo all hugely underperformed in America.

However, the BBC reports studio films this year have earned $US4.1 billion, close to the previous high of $US4.4 billion in 2011.

Weekend takings brought the total box office for 2013 to $US7 billion so far.

Fox head of distribution Chris Aronson admitted that 2013 had seen some "high-profile failures.'' But he added:

"The summer's been fantastic despite the gloom and doom some in the media have portrayed".
