A new opinion poll out on Monday shows Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's personal popularity is at its lowest level ever.

The latest Newspoll shows voter satisfaction with Mr Rudd dropped to 35%; down 4 percentage points since the last such poll two weeks ago.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott made up some ground; with his satisfaction rating rising three points to 41%.

The government has also fallen further behind the Coalition on a party-preferred basis, with the Coalition now holding a 54% to 46% lead.

Voters go to the polls in Australia on 7 September.
