Trial date set for Pistorius

8:23 am on 20 August 2013

A date has been set for the trial of South African paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend.

Pistorius, 26, has admitted shooting Reeva Steenkamp, 29, on 14 February, Valentine's Day, but said he mistook her for an intruder.

The Pretoria magistrates court was told on Monday the dates of 3 - 20 March had been mutually agreed for the trial.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said said he planned to transfer the case to the high court.

The BBC reports the hearing was held on what would have been Ms Steenkamp's 30th birthday. The accused was granted bail of one million rand (£74,000; $US110,000) in February.

Pistorius, a double amputee, won gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and also competed at the Olympics.
