The owner of a ferry that sank in Papua New Guinea in February last year has been let out on bail after being arrested on 162 charges of manslaughter.

Captain Peter Sharp was arrested on Tuesday and was released from custody on Wednesday night after posting bail of $3700.

As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered to surrender his passport and not interfere with any witnesses.

He is also charged with negligence and operating an unseaworthy ship.

The ABC reports a Commission of Inquiry last year found the ferry was unsafe, unseaworthy and overloaded.
