Movie stars Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have separated after nearly 13 years of marriage.

According to People magazine, they have vacationed separately in recent months and are ostensibly living apart.

Neither star has filed for divorce nor moved toward a legal separation, it added.

Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, met at the Deauville Film Festival in France in 1998. They married in 2000 and have two children.

Zeta-Jones said in April that she was seeking help for bipolar disorder, which she disclosed in 2011. Douglas was diangosed with advanced throat cancer in 2010.

"The stress has taken a toll on their marriage," People quoted a friend as saying.

Douglas has two Oscars: the first as a producer of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and the other for best actor in Wall Street (1987). His latest film is a biopic of Liberace, Behind the Candelabra.

Zeta-Jones won the best supporting actress award for the musical Chicago in 2002.
