Attempt to kill Yemeni leader

11:04 am on 1 September 2013

Officials in Yemen say the Prime Minister has survived an assassination attempt unharmed.

One of Mohammed Salem Basindwa's advisers says gunmen in a vehicle opened fire on his motorcade as he returned home from his office in the capital Sanaa.

The gunmen escaped and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The adviser says Mr Basindwa's guards identified the license plates of the car used in the attack and security forces were trying to track it down after the assailants fled the scene, Reuters reports.

Mr Basindwa was chosen to head a government of national unity in 2011 after long-serving President Ali Abdullah Saleh quit under a Gulf-brokered power transfer deal.
