Gangland killing in Marseille

10:51 am on 6 September 2013

The son of the sports director of Olympique Marseille, one of the biggest football teams in Europe, has been killed in a gangland shooting in Marseille.

The BBC reports Adrien Anigo, 30, was shot and killed by gunmen on a motorbike as he was getting out of his car at about 4pm in a northern suburb of the French city.

It was the second such shooting in Marseille on Thursday, and is believed to be one of 15 similar killings in the city so far this year.

The BBC reports many street killings around Marseille this year have been linked to drugs trafficking.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault sent extra riot police and investigators last month to try to stem the killings.
