WA teachers to strike over job cuts

7:45 am on 7 September 2013

School teachers in Western Australia intend to walk off the job because the state government is sticking to a plan to cut 500 education jobs and freeze teacher numbers.

Teachers, principals and support staff responded on Tuesday with an ultimatum to reverse the decision or face industrial action.

The ABC reports their deadline of 5pm on Friday passed without word from the government.

State School Teachers Union president Anne Gisborne said school staff will hold a half-day stop work rally before the end of the school term.

The cuts were announced last month. State premier Colin Barnett has previously said any strikes would be pointless because the decision is final and will take effect from next year.
