Two people have been charged over the theft of brass vases from a crematorium in New South Wales.

Police said 496 vases were taken from memorial gardens at the crematorium in Unanderra, on the south coast, on Wednesday evening or early Thursday.

The vases were stolen from three separate memorial walls, including 190 from an area specifically for ex-servicemen and women. More than 50 brass name plates were damaged.

AAP reports a man and a woman were arrested on Friday.

The man is charged with larceny, receiving/disposing stolen property, and possession of a prohibited drug.

The woman was charged with larceny and granted conditional bail to appear in in Wollongong Local Court on 1 October.
