Voyager now beyond the solar system

NASA has confirmed that the Voyager One spacecraft has left the solar system.

The probe was launched 36 years ago and scientists believe it left the solar system in August last year.

Launched in 1977, Voyager was sent initially to study the outer planets, but then just kept on going.

Today, the BBC reports the mission is almost 19 billion km from Earth and moving at 45km per second.

It will not approach another star for nearly 40,000 years,

Project scientist Gary Stark said the spacecraft is now in uncharted territory.
