German actor Otto Sander, who appeared in Das Boot and Wings of Desire, has died.
His agent confirmed he died on Thursday, but no cause of death was given.
Sander played a shell-shocked U-boat captain in Das Boot, a six-hour film by Wolfgang Petersen in 1981.
The BBC reports he played an angel in Wings of Desire, a surrealist drama by Wim Wenders that was later remade in the United States as City of Angels. He also appeared in the sequel, Faraway So Close.
Born in Hanover, Sander, 72, was also a veteran of the stage, becoming one of the top theatre actors in Berlin.
