New clashes in Egypt

1:31 pm on 14 September 2013

Supporters and opponents of deposed president Mohamed Morsi clashed during protests on Friday, a day after a state of emergency in Egypt was extended by two months.

The BBC reports pro-Morsi demonstrations called by the Muslim Brotherhood appeared bigger than in recent weeks.

One person was killed and at least injured in clashes after Friday prayers in the coastal city of Alexandria.

On Thursday the interim government said that the state of emergency was being extended to mid-November because of the security situation.

Unrest in Egypt rose after President Morsi was removed by the Army on 3 July. Two pro-Morsi camps in Cairo were broken up on 14 August by security forces, in which hundreds of people were killed.

The BBC reports it was Egypt's bloodiest day since an uprising two years ago that saw the departure of president Hosni Mubarak.
