Part of tropical island in Queensland for lease

Part of an island in the Whitsunday Passage in Queensland is for lease for $A985,000 - about the same as a townhouse in inner Sydney.

The location is four hectares of St Bees Island, which is owned by the Australian government.

AAP reports there's also an annual fee of $A17,000 to lease the property.

Located in the South Cumberland group of islands, St Bees is about 20km from Mackay on the central coast.

The trip is 12 minutes via a regular charter flight or one hour by boat from the Mackay marina.

The deal includes a sandy beach and three cottages - tropical sunsets and lack of neighbours are a bonus. The rest of the island is national park.

Agent Kim Griffiths said the lease was being sold by a syndicate.

The island would suit a retiree and the buyer should expect a lot of visitors, he told AAP.
