Tony Abbott sworn in as Australia PM

7:53 pm on 18 September 2013

Australia's 28th Prime Minister has been officially sworn in during a ceremony at Government House in Canberra.

Tony Abbott defeated Kevin Rudd in the country's general election ten days ago.

He has sworn the oath of office and now officially takes on the role of Prime Minister.

Mr Abbott has been criticised for including only one woman in his cabinet and for not having specific ministries for science, ageing and disabilities.

Mr Abbott says he will immediately instruct the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to prepare legislation to repeal the carbon tax.

He also says incoming treasurer Joe Hockey will instruct the board of the Clean Energy Corporation to cease operations.

It is also expected that the Climate Change Authority and the Climate Commission will be abolished.
