The Philippines and Taiwan are braced for Typhoon Usagi.

Weather officials said the typhoon was 560km east-southeast of Taiwan and 360km from the northern Philippines on Friday morning.

Both Taiwan and the Philippines have issued alerts and warned boats to exercise caution.

Usagi was projected to make landfall in southern China on Sunday with the outer edges expected to hit the coast of Guangdong and Hong Kong.

The BBC reports the storm is forecast to weaken by Sunday.

Typhoons are common during the summer in parts of East Asia.
