Businessman ahead in close result in Queensland

9:28 am on 22 September 2013

Queensland businessman Clive Palmer finished 36 votes ahead in the federal seat of Fairfax, the last undecided electorate in Australia's general election. The result triggered an automatic recount.

Mr Palmer finished ahead of Ted O'Brien of the Liberal-National Party when the last ballot papers were counted in Fairfax on Saturday. Preferences will be distributed on Monday.

The ABC reports the recount will be done by the Australian Electoral Commission - an agency which Mr Palmer has previously criticised as greatly incompetent.

Fairfax is on the Sunshine Coast.
