Independence supporters march in Edinburgh

9:58 am on 22 September 2013

Thousands of supporters of Scottish independence marched through Edinburgh on Saturday.

Police estimated that more than 8000 people took part in the march. Organisers said 20,000 - 30,000 people were involved in the day's events.

The BBC reports a range of groups took part, including political parties, farmers and football supporters.

Speakers at the rally included First Minister Alex Salmond of the Scottish National Party.

A referendum on whether Scotland should become independent from Britain is to take place on 18 September next year. Voters will be asked a yes/no question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"
