Behind the Candelabra, a biopic about Liberace, received the top honours at the Emmy awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The film, which was shown on the HBO cable network in the United States, won three awards including best TV movie and a best actor award for Michael Douglas.

Breaking Bad was named best drama, while Modern Family took the leading comedy award for the fourth time.

Claire Danes took the best actress prize for her role in Homeland, for the second time.

The lead actor award went to Jeff Daniels for his role in The Newsroom. It was the first Emmy that Daniels, who a self-righteous news anchor, has won.

The BBC reports the event included a performance by Sir Elton John, who paid tribute to the late pianist Liberace.

Sir Elton, who performed Home Again, said he was "honoured" to have been asked to take part.
