Afghan police killed at border checkpoint

3:32 pm on 24 September 2013

At least 11 Afghan policemen have been killed in an attack by the Taliban on a checkpoint on the border with Pakistan.

The attack took place at a border post in the district of Shorabak in Kandahar province early on Sunday. The Shorabak border is about 70km west of the Pakistani city of Quetta.

A Taliban spokesperson confirmed that it had carried out the attack.

The BBC reports Afghan police are bearing the brunt of much of the Taliban insurgency as foreign forces prepare to withdraw before the end of next year.
