7.8 quake hits remote part of Pakistan

A major earthquake struck a remote mountainous part of western Pakistan and was felt as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi, hundreds of kilometres to the east, where buildings shook.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, Reuters reports.

The United States Geological Survey says the 7.8 magnitude quake struck southeast of Dalbandin in Pakistan's western province of Baluchistan.

Residents say tremors were felt across the province as well as in the sprawling port city of Karachi.

The epicentre is in a remote, thinly populated mountainous with no major industrial installations.

The BBC quoted Pakistani media as saying many houses have been damaged. However, there have so far been no reports of casualties.
