A date has been set for the christening of Britain's Prince George, the son of Prince William and his wife Catherine.

The service at the Chapel Royal in St James's Palace in London will be held on 23 October.

It will be performed by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the head of the world's Anglicans.

The royal family said the christening would be a private affair, but photographs will be taken after the service, AFP reports.

A royal spokesperson says the names of godparents will be released nearer the time, although it is rumoured that William's brother Prince Harry and Catherine's sister Pippa Middleton will be among them.

Prince George, who is third in line to the British throne, was born on 22 July.
