A fragment of a flag believed to have been carried into the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 was sold at auction for £3800 in England on Saturday.

The BBC reports the red and gold cloth fragment measures 16.5cm by 14cm.

Auctioneer Charles Hanson said the piece had strong provenance and was part of a far larger flag carried by Henry Tudor's standard bearer, which was hung above his tomb in 1490.

The Battle of Bosworth between the houses of Lancaster and York took place at Bosworth Field, in Leicestershire, in 1485.

Henry's forces slew Richard, Duke of York, ending the Wars of the Roses and marking the beginning of the Tudor dynasty.
