The Royal Australian Navy rescued two French yachtsmen whose yacht sank in the Tasman Sea on Sunday.

AAP reports a Navy Seahawk helicopter winched the men from a small boat after they abandoned their sinking yacht 667km east of Jervis Bay, on the south coast of New South Wales, in rough conditions on Sunday.

The sailors were taken to the HMAS Perth which is expected to arrive in Jervis Bay on Monday.

In a statement, the Navy said they were in a satisfactory condition after suffering mild hypothermia.

Captain Lee Goddard of HMAS Perth said the rescue, in which the helicopter used its night vision equipment, went very smoothly.
