Race complaint against UK police upheld

A British policeman accused of racial discrimination against the brother of a man killed in a racist attack has a case to answer for misconduct, the police watchdog has said.

Stuart Lawrence, a 35-year-old teacher, complained after he was stopped by police last year.

He is the brother of Stephen Lawrence, who was stabbed to death in a racist attack in south-east London in 1993.

A Metropolitan Police investigation cleared the officer who stopped him in November of any wrongdoing, but Mr Lawrence appealed to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The force said it was considering the IPCC's recommendations.

Earlier this year Mr Lawrence said he had been stopped by police up to 25 times over several years.

Last year Gary Dobson and David Norris were convicted of the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

The Met faced criticism over the original investigation into the killing of the 18-year-old student and a public inquiry branded the force institutionally racist.
