Police say up to 100 cars have been incinerated in a Sydney car park as extreme fire conditions wreak havoc and threaten homes across the state.

The ABC reports the cars caught fire at the Olympic Park Aquatic Centre at Homebush as hundreds of people enjoyed a Sunday afternoon swim.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Ian Krimmer says the inferno was started by a grass fire, fanned by strong winds.

About 500 people were evacuated from the swimming centre.

The blaze was later contained and there are no reports of injuries.

Meanwhile, there are two emergency warnings in place for bushfires at Port Stephens and another near Singleton.

At Port Stephens there are reports five homes have been destroyed and authorities say a home may have been lost in a bushfire at Wisemans Ferry on the Hawkesbury River.

Residents at Fingal Bay residents are also being urged to take shelter as a fire in scrubland burns out of control.

More than 30 firefighters and water bombing aircraft are at the scene.

A large part of New South Wales is experiencing severe to extreme fire conditions as temperatures rise well into the 30s and hot winds pick up.
