Tanning beds to be banned in Queensland

Tanning beds are to be banned in Queensland because of their link to skin cancer.

The ABC reports the state government began phasing them out last year, and a total ban will come into effect on 31 December 2014.

Licence holders will receive a thousand dollars compensation for each of their tanning beds.

Queensland health minister Lawrence Springborg says the ban will save lives and the state has a role.

The move is in line with similar bans proposed in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Australian capital territory.
