A roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan has killed 18 people travelling in a minibus on their way to a wedding.

The attack happened in a traditional Pashtun area in Ghazni province, south of the Afghan capital Kabul.

Officials say nearly all the dead were women and children.

Much of the countryside of Ghazni province is in Taliban hands. Taliban militants have denied carrying out the attack but the local government says it believes insurgents are to blame.

Improvised explosive devices, like bomb that struck the wedding party, are the single biggest killer in the Afghan conflict, Reuters reports.

The devices causing over a third of civilian casualties in the first six months of the year, according to a UN report.
