Fleetwood Mac has announced the cancellation of its upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand, with co-founder and bassist John Mc Vie scheduled for cancer treatment.

"We are sorry not to be able to play these Australian and New Zealand dates," the band said in a statement issued by promoters Live Nation Entertainment on Sunday night, AAP reports.

"We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best."

Tickets for the band's 14-date tour will be refunded from Monday.

Fleetwood Mac had just completed the European leg of a successful worldwide tour. The band was due to begin its Australian leg in Sydney on 10 November and in Auckland from 4 December.
