Brazilian surfs giant wave in Portugal

A Brazilian surfer has reportedly broken the record for the largest wave ever successfully surfed during the storm that has battered western Europe.

Carlos Burle was filmed riding a wall of water about 30 metres high in the Atlantic off the coast of Portugalon Monday.

Even before he surfed his biggest ever wave, Mr Burle knew it would be an unforgettable day. He had just saved his friend's life by swimming her to the shore after she broke an ankle and was knocked out by another giant wave, the BBC reports.

But there was more to come. The 46-year-old went back into the sea and braved what could be the biggest wave ever surfed.

It still needs unofficial confirmation to know whether he took the crown off Hawaiian Garrett MacNamara, who rode a 24-metre-tall wave in Portugal last year.
