Australia is to send a group of asylum seekers who were rescued off the coast of Java, to Christmas Island after Indonesia refused to accept them.

Indonesia says about 60 asylum seekers were on board a boat which ran into trouble on Thursday.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said the federal government asked Jakarta to transfer them to Indonesia as their boat ran into trouble in Indonesia's search and rescue zone.

The ABC reports Jakarta on Friday refused to take the group back.

Mr Morrison issued a statement on Saturday saying the asylum seekers will not be resettled in Australia. He confirmed the group would be taken to Christmas Island.
