Pakistan thanked for rogue soldier arrest

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has personally thanked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan over the arrest of a rogue Afghan soldier accused of murdering three Australian soldiers.

Sergeant Hekmatullah was captured in Pakistan in February.

He has been charged with murdering Lance Corporal Stjepan Milosevic, Sapper James Martin and Private Robert Poate at Patrol Base Wahab in Afghanistan in August 2012.

Two other Australians were wounded and several Afghans.

Mr Abbott spoke with Mr Sharif on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo on Friday and thanked Pakistan for its assistance.

They also discussed security and economic challenges facing Pakistan.
